Customs Service Strikes Major Blows Against Fuel Smuggling in Nigeria with Operation Whirlwind

In an effort to tackle the smuggling of petroleum products in Nigeria, Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Adewale Adeniyi has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited.

During a meeting with NNPC delegates on July 5, 2024, at NCS headquarters in Abuja, CGC Adeniyi highlighted the severe economic impact of fuel smuggling. He explained that the price disparities between Nigeria and neighboring countries create strong incentives for smuggling, which 'Operation Whirlwind' aims to mitigate by working with various stakeholders to reduce the illegal movement of Premium Motor Spirits (PMS).

Adeniyi stated, “Despite the challenges, our operations have led to significant seizures across the country. We have uncovered sophisticated methods smugglers use to transport fuel, including hidden hoses in filling stations.” He added that those caught have been arrested, with their products confiscated and filling stations sealed.

Adeniyi acknowledged the operation's strain on NCS resources but deemed it a rewarding endeavor. He emphasized the need for sustained partnership with NNPC and better data and support systems for customs personnel to enhance their capabilities.

Operation Whirlwind's coordinator, Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, reported that the operation, initiated five weeks ago, has achieved substantial victories. He cited a recent seizure of 79,000 liters of fuel in Kebbi state as evidence of their commitment and called for continued support from border communities and other agencies.

NNPC's Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, described PMS smuggling as a major national challenge and praised the efforts of Operation Whirlwind for significantly reducing smuggled fuel volumes. Kyari assured NNPC's continued support in combating this crime, appreciating the impact of the collaboration with NCS.
