Nigeria, Pakistan Strengthen Military Ties as Defence Chiefs Meet in Abuja

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of Nigeria, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, received the Pakistani Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Shahir Shamsad Mirza, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja. The high level visit, described as strategic, underscores the growing defence cooperation between Nigeria and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

In a statement issued by the Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the CDS noted that the ongoing cooperation has already led to the training of over 2,000 Nigerian officers in various Pakistani military institutions an achievement he said reflects the success and promise of the partnership.

General Mirza commended the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their sustained efforts in combating terrorism, insurgency, and other forms of insecurity.

He praised the longstanding mutual relationship between the two nations, highlighting shared values in culture, religion, and diversity.

Additionally, General Mirza described Nigeria as a “giant leader in Africa” with strategic importance to Pakistan.

General Mirza expressed optimism for an even stronger partnership, particularly with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

He noted that both countries face similar security challenges and can benefit immensely from closer cooperation in defence and security sectors.
