The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has been conferred with a Fellowship Award by the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, in recognition of his professional accomplishments and contributions to national development.

The honour was bestowed during a special convocation ceremony held where Adeniyi described the award as both a personal and professional milestone.

Reflecting on his time at the institute, the Customs boss noted that the NIJ instilled in him enduring values that have shaped his career trajectory. He highlighted professionalism, discipline, and continuous self-development as core principles he has upheld over the years.

“Professionalism is a standard, not a performance; discipline is a habit, not an event; and continuous self-development is a personal obligation,” he said.

Adeniyi further stated that the recognition extends beyond him to the Nigeria Customs Service, noting that the award underscores the importance of dedication to service and the possibility of recognition for hard work.

As part of his commitment to giving back to his alma mater, he announced plans to support the establishment of a state-of-the-art multimedia and resource centre at the institute. According to him, the proposed two-storey facility will feature a radio station, editing and production suites, and integrated multimedia platforms to enhance hands-on training for students.

The Chairman of the Governing Council, Olusegun Osoba, described the event as historic, revealing that the conferment received approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He noted that Adeniyi is the first alumnus of the institute to be awarded the fellowship, an honour reserved for individuals with outstanding achievements.

“He graduated from here and has been a shining example of an ex-student of this institute in his area of endeavour,” Osoba said.

In the same vein, the Provost of the institute, Gbenga Adefaye, stated that the award reflects the institution’s enduring commitment to discipline, ethical responsibility, and intellectual rigour. He added that Adeniyi’s career exemplifies how these values can translate into impactful leadership beyond the field of journalism.
