The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged acts of mutiny, in a move authorities say underscores the Armed Forces’ commitment to discipline and national security.

The inauguration, which took place on April 24, 2026, follows an earlier statement issued by the DHQ on January 26, 2026, addressing concerns surrounding the alleged plot to overthrow the government.

In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military high command described the development as a critical step toward reinforcing accountability and maintaining the integrity of the Armed Forces.

According to the statement, the court martial proceedings will adhere strictly to established legal procedures, ensuring fairness, impartiality, and due process throughout the trial. Authorities emphasized that all cases would be handled within the framework of existing military justice laws, with a firm commitment to upholding the rights of the accused.

“The inauguration marks a significant step in reinforcing discipline, accountability, and the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding national integrity and constituted authority,” the statement noted.

The DHQ further reaffirmed its resolve to maintain professionalism and uphold the rule of law, stressing that the principles of fair hearing would be observed in line with military justice standards.

The trial of the personnel is expected to draw significant attention, as the military continues efforts to strengthen internal discipline while addressing threats to national stability.
