Navy Foils Militant Resurgence, Destroys Suspected Criminal Camp in Rivers

The Nigerian Navy has thwarted an attempt by suspected militants to establish a new operational base in Rivers State, following a swift intelligence-driven operation that led to the discovery and destruction of an emerging camp in the Soku axis of the state.

The operation was carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH as part of the Navy’s continued efforts to combat militancy, maritime crime, and other security threats across the Niger Delta region.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the operation followed credible intelligence indicating that a criminal group linked to a notorious militant network had relocated from the Nembe axis and was attempting to establish a new base within the Soku general area.

The Navy said upon arrival at the location, the patrol team observed signs of recent human activity suggesting preparations were underway to establish a militant camp.

A thorough search of the area led to the recovery of communication devices, accessories, about 150 metres of 4-inch industrial hose suspected to be intended for illegal bunkering activities, as well as other operational materials.

The suspected camp was subsequently destroyed by the naval team to prevent its use as a launch point for criminal operations.

The Navy noted that preliminary intelligence linked the group to several maritime-related crimes, including kidnapping, pipeline vandalism, sea robbery, and other illicit activities, stressing that the operation was crucial in preventing the re-emergence of criminal networks in the area.

It added that the successful mission reflected the Navy’s proactive approach of using intelligence-led operations to identify and dismantle criminal infrastructure before such facilities become fully operational.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations, enhancing maritime security, and working with other security agencies and host communities to eliminate criminal elements and protect Nigeria’s maritime environment.
