The Maritime Component of Operation WHIRL STROKE has issued a safety advisory to mariners, boat operators, passengers, and residents of riverine communities following a significant rise in water levels caused by the ongoing rainy season.

The advisory, issued on the directive of the Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, warned that the increased water volume along inland waterways within the Joint Operations Area has resulted in stronger currents and turbulence, posing serious risks to maritime activities.

The Maritime Component Commander, Lieutenant Commander Dusse Christopher Zakari, urged members of the marine community to exercise caution and strictly observe safety measures to prevent boat mishaps, loss of lives, and destruction of property.

In a statement signed by the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Operation WHIRL STROKE, Lieutenant AHMAD ZUBAIRU ZUBAIRU, mariners and boat operators were advised to prioritise safety while carrying out their activities on the waterways.

The advisory directed all passengers and boat operators to wear life jackets at all times while onboard, adding that every boat must have at least one life buoy available for emergency situations.

Boat owners were also warned against overloading their vessels beyond approved carrying capacities, while operators were encouraged to ensure they carry essential safety equipment such as functional torchlights, extra spark plugs, and tarpaulins.

The Maritime Component further cautioned against the pollution of waterways with non-biodegradable materials and other waste products, stressing the need to protect the environment and maintain safe waterways.

It also directed maritime unions to enforce a ban on night sailing, stating that marine operations must only take place between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily for security reasons.

The statement added that all boat operators must register with their respective unions and carry valid means of identification while operating on the waterways.

Riverine communities were equally encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious or criminal activities to relevant security agencies.

Lieutenant Commander Zakari warned that individuals who violate the safety directives would face sanctions in line with existing regulations. He also called on maritime unions to ensure strict compliance among their members.

The Maritime Component of Operation WHIRL STROKE reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding property, and ensuring the security of waterways within its area of responsibility.

Members of the public were urged to cooperate with security agencies by adhering to the safety measures and remaining alert at all times.
