Defence Ministry, NIMC Partner to Strengthen Data Integrity, National Security

The Federal Ministry of Defence has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to fully implement the provisions of the NIMC Act 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening data integrity, enhancing identity verification and improving Nigeria's national security architecture.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), disclosed this while receiving the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit to the Ministry's headquarters, Ship House, Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the partnership is expected to leverage integrated digital identity systems to support defence operations and reinforce national security.

Speaking during the meeting, General Musa stressed that reliable data has become indispensable in addressing the increasingly complex security challenges confronting the country, noting that effective intelligence and security operations depend largely on accurate identity management.

He explained that the ability of security agencies to identify individuals accurately is critical to combating both internal and external threats.

"For us in the security sector, data is critical to know who we are dealing with, who we are expecting, and even those within us, because sometimes the enemy is within. 

"It is therefore vital for us to be able to identify everyone accurately," the minister said.

General Musa also assured that the Ministry of Defence would continue to provide full support to relevant government institutions in line with its constitutional mandate of safeguarding the nation's territorial integrity and security.

Earlier, the Director-General of NIMC, Dr Coker-Odusote, said the visit centred on discussions surrounding the strategic implementation of the NIMC Act 2026 and the role of a robust digital identity system in strengthening Nigeria's security framework.

She emphasised that an integrated and reliable identity management system would improve identity verification processes, facilitate intelligence gathering and enhance coordination among security and government agencies.

At the end of the meeting, both the Ministry of Defence and NIMC agreed on the need to develop a secure, trusted and interoperable digital identity ecosystem capable of supporting defence operations, improving intelligence sharing and strengthening collaboration across government institutions.

The partnership is expected to deepen inter-agency cooperation while providing a more efficient framework for tackling emerging security threats through data-driven decision-making and enhanced identity management.
