Nigerian Navy Rescues Two Teenagers from Drowning in Bayelsa

Personnel of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO have rescued two teenage boys from drowning following a boat mishap in Egweama Community, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The rescue, which took place on July 28, 2026, has been described as another demonstration of the Nigerian Navy's commitment to protecting lives and ensuring safety on the nation's waterways.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the two boys, both aged 16, ran into trouble while returning from a routine trip within the community's waterways after their wooden boat capsized due to adverse water conditions.

The statement explained that the teenagers were left stranded in the water and were at risk of drowning before personnel of FOB FORMOSO spotted them and immediately launched a rescue operation.

"The distressed victims were swiftly rescued and evacuated to safety. They were subsequently provided with the necessary assistance and medical attention to ascertain their condition," the statement said.

The Navy noted that the successful operation reflects the professionalism, vigilance and operational readiness of its personnel in safeguarding lives within Nigeria's maritime environment.

It added that the rescue underscores the Service's enduring commitment to maritime safety, search and rescue operations, and the protection of lives in coastal and riverine communities.

The statement further stressed that the operation highlights the Nigerian Navy's efforts to strengthen its relationship with host communities through responsive, people-centred operations.

The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all legitimate users of Nigeria's waterways while continuing to fulfil its constitutional mandate of securing the nation's maritime domain.
