Tinubu Hails Aguiyi-Ironsi as Symbol of Unity, Courage at 60th Memorial

President Bola Tinubu has described Nigeria's first Military Head of State, the late General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, as a symbol of patriotism, courage, discipline and selfless service, saying his legacy remains an enduring guide for national unity and nation-building.

The President's tribute was delivered by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), during the 60th memorial celebration held in Umuahia, Abia State, to commemorate the late military leader six decades after his death.

Represented by the Defence Minister, President Tinubu said General Aguiyi-Ironsi distinguished himself throughout his military career through loyalty, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to duty.

According to the President, the late General made history as the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army before becoming Nigeria's first Military Head of State at one of the country's most challenging periods.

"Although his tenure was brief, he demonstrated a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian state. 

"He understood that leadership demands sacrifice, placing the interest of the nation above personal considerations," the President said.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration's commitment to safeguarding Nigeria's unity and strengthening democratic institutions, stressing that the values exemplified by Aguiyi-Ironsi remain relevant to addressing contemporary national challenges.

"Our diversity remains one of our greatest strengths, and it is through mutual respect, tolerance, justice and shared purpose that we will continue to build a peaceful and prosperous nation," he stated.

The President also conveyed the nation's gratitude and sympathy to the family of the late military leader while commending the organisers for sustaining the annual remembrance, noting that preserving the memories of national heroes helps strengthen the values that define Nigeria.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who also spoke at the event, described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a patriotic officer who assumed national leadership during one of the country's most turbulent periods.

"General Aguiyi-Ironsi was a fine officer and a patriot who found himself at the helm during a turbulent storm in our national journey," Obasanjo said.

He added that the late Head of State's memory serves as a reminder that Nigeria's unity came at a great cost and urged successive generations to safeguard the peace, cohesion and institutional integrity of the Armed Forces.

In his remarks, Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, military authorities and elder statesmen for honouring one of the state's most distinguished sons.

Otti said Abia remained proud of Aguiyi-Ironsi's courage and supreme sacrifice for national unity, adding that his legacy continues to inspire his administration's commitment to good governance, justice and national cohesion.

The memorial attracted several prominent personalities, including former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, serving and retired military officers, lawmakers and traditional rulers, who joined in prayers for the Armed Forces, the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and the continued peace and prosperity of Nigeria.
