The worsening insecurity in Benue State has again claimed innocent lives, with a student of Divine Love Catholic School reportedly among 10 people killed at Mbaterem in Ukum Local Government Area of the state.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has renewed concerns over the persistent violence and attacks in parts of Benue, particularly communities that have continued to live under the threat of armed assailants.

The deceased student, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was said to have been caught up in the attack, cutting short a life filled with promise and aspirations.

The latest killing has triggered renewed calls for urgent and coordinated action by government and other stakeholders to protect communities and prevent further loss of lives.

Residents and concerned citizens have expressed frustration over what they described as the prolonged neglect of insecurity in some parts of the state, warning that continued inaction could embolden criminal elements and deepen the humanitarian crisis.

Beyond elected political leaders, questions are also being raised about the roles of traditional and religious institutions in confronting the security challenges confronting their communities. Stakeholders argue that leaders at all levels must work together to mobilise communities, support security agencies and promote peace.

The situation has also raised concerns about the safety of students and young people whose lives and education are increasingly being threatened by violence.

For many families in affected communities, the recurring attacks have brought grief, displacement and uncertainty, with innocent people paying the ultimate price for insecurity.

The death of the Divine Love Catholic student is therefore not only a personal tragedy for her family and school community but also another painful reminder of the human cost of insecurity in Benue State.

As the state mourns the 10 victims of the Mbaterem attack, there are renewed appeals to the Federal and Benue State Governments, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders to intensify efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the state.

For the family, classmates and loved ones of the young student, however, no intervention can restore the future that has been violently taken away.
May the souls of the 10 victims rest in peace.
