Defence Minister Unveils South East Basketball Championship, Donates ₦2 Million to Abia Youth Camp

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has announced plans to establish a South-East Regional Basketball Championship as part of efforts to discover, develop and promote grassroots sporting talents across the region.

General Musa made the announcement in Umuahia, Abia State, at the end of his three day official working visit to the state. The initiative, he said, is aimed at providing a structured platform for young basketball players from the five South-East states to showcase their talents and pursue professional opportunities.

The Defence Minister spoke after visiting the Umuahia Township Stadium, where he interacted with participants at the inaugural multi-age basketball camp organised by the Crossover Foundation and sponsored by Nigerian diaspora basketball stars, Godsgift Achiuwa and Precious Achiuwa.

Commending the Crossover Foundation and the Abia State Government for collaborating to expand youth sports development, General Musa described sports as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, national unity and character building.

To support the ongoing basketball camp, the Minister announced an immediate donation of ₦2 million, pledging the Federal Government's commitment to initiatives that provide young people with opportunities to excel through sports.

He assured the participants that the proposed South-East Regional Basketball Championship would become a flagship tournament, bringing together emerging talents from across the region while serving as a pathway for identifying future national and international stars.

General Musa also called on parents to encourage their children to participate actively in organised sporting activities, noting that sports help instil discipline, leadership qualities and teamwork.

In a further boost for aspiring athletes, the Minister disclosed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria would soon commence targeted sports recruitment programmes designed to provide talented young athletes with career opportunities within the military.

The visit concluded with the organisers presenting General Musa with a signed basketball in appreciation of his support and commitment to youth and sports development.

The Minister's announcement is expected to strengthen grassroots basketball in the South-East and create new opportunities for young athletes to develop their talents while contributing to national development through sports.
