Matawalle Hails Tinubu Over 30–80% Salary Increase for Armed Forces Personnel

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, describing the move as a major boost to troop welfare and national security.

Matawalle said the salary review underscores the Federal Government's commitment to improving the welfare, morale and operational effectiveness of military personnel who continue to make significant sacrifices in defending Nigeria's sovereignty and tackling insecurity across the country.

According to the minister, the salary review had remained a priority since the inception of the Tinubu administration, noting that he personally championed the initiative within government circles.

He expressed appreciation to the President for what he described as his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of members of the Armed Forces.

"It is a clear reflection of your passion for building a motivated, resilient and highly professional Armed Forces capable of effectively addressing Nigeria's security challenges," Matawalle said.

Under the new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, about 250,000 military personnel are expected to benefit from the enhanced pay package.

The minister explained that officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.

He added that officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will benefit from a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase.

Matawalle said the salary adjustment forms part of the Federal Government's broader efforts to improve the welfare of troops engaged in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.

Quoting President Tinubu, the minister said, "The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation."

He further disclosed that the Federal Government would continue to prioritise the welfare of military personnel while strengthening the Armed Forces through the acquisition of modern weapons, equipment and advanced technological tools to enhance operational efficiency.

The minister also urged members of the Armed Forces to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government's appreciation for their patriotism and dedication to national service.

"I urge our servicemen to take this gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation," he said.
