The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has commenced efforts to explore holy and historical sites in Greece as part of moves to diversify pilgrimage destinations and create new opportunities for Nigerian Christians.

The initiative is in line with the mandate of the Commission as provided under the NCPC Act 2007, which empowers it to identify and explore holy sites across the world for the spiritual benefit of Nigerian pilgrims.

As part of the renewed engagement, the Executive Secretary of the NCPC, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, last week embarked on an exploratory visit to Hydra Island in Greece, a destination noted for its rich history and distinctive cultural heritage.

During the visit, Adegbite held strategic discussions with key pilgrimage stakeholders on the island and was received by the Mayor of Hydra Island, George Koukoudakis.

Hydra is renowned for its unique car-free environment, with donkeys and horses serving as the primary means of transporting people and goods around the island.

Speaking on the significance of the visit, Adegbite said Greece's rich Christian heritage, historical landmarks, hospitality and tourism potential made the country an attractive destination for faith-based tourism.

He said exploring Greece would provide Nigerian pilgrims with opportunities to deepen their spiritual experiences while also opening new avenues for collaboration between Nigeria and Greek pilgrimage stakeholders.

The NCPC boss emphasised that the initiative was part of the Commission's broader strategy to expand pilgrimage destinations and provide Nigerian Christians with access to significant Christian sites outside the country's traditional pilgrimage routes.

The renewed engagement between the NCPC and Greece is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation in pilgrimage and faith-based tourism while contributing to the Commission's efforts to broaden international partnerships in the interest of Nigerian pilgrims.

The development also underscores the NCPC's commitment to leveraging Nigeria's participation in global Christian heritage and tourism networks to enhance the quality and diversity of pilgrimage experiences available to Nigerian Christians.
