NYSC DG Commends Abia Government for Unalloyed Support

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Abia State Government for its sustained support and commitment to the welfare and operations of the Scheme in the state.

Nafiu gave the commendation when he paid a courtesy visit to the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, at Umunu, Umuehim in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.

The NYSC Director General specifically appreciated the state government for the renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp, provision of a new Secretariat complex to enhance the Scheme’s operations, as well as the upward review of allowances for Corps Members serving in the state.

He described Abia as a peaceful and Corps Members friendly state, noting that the number of female Corps Members deployed to the state was higher than that of males.

According to him, Abia is also among the few states in the country where Corps Members are deployed to serve in all local government areas.

Nafiu appealed to the state government to implement the recently reviewed allowance for Corps Members and commence the second phase of the renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp.

Responding, Governor Otti congratulated the NYSC DG on his appointment and assured him of the state government’s continued support for the Scheme.

Otti explained that his decision to overhaul the Orientation Camp was informed by the deplorable condition of facilities he observed during his visit to the camp in 2023.

The governor disclosed that the first phase of the renovation had been completed, adding that he had already directed the commencement of the second phase.

He expressed satisfaction with the contribution of the 8,890 Corps Members currently serving in Abia and requested the deployment of more Corps Members to the state.

The governor stressed that Abia was not only welcoming to Corps Members but also to people from across the country who came to the state to contribute to its development.

He cited the state’s Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere, as an example, noting that Ojeikere initially came to Abia as a Corps Member and was subsequently offered automatic employment into the state civil service after distinguishing himself during his service year.

Governor Otti said the state would continue to provide an enabling environment for Corps Members to contribute meaningfully to the development of Abia while also benefiting from their service experience.
