2026 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival Set for Grand Finale in Uyo

Expectedly, the curtains will come down on the (2nd edition) of 2026 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival today, Sunday, September 27th, with a colourful closing ceremony scheduled to take place at Uyo Township Stadium, bringing to an end days of intense competition, talent discovery and sporting excitement across the state.

However, the grand finale is expected to gather many athletes, officials, sports administrators, scouts, supporters and dignitaries, among them His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, the Governor of Akwa Ibom state, who is expected to grace the occasion and formally declare the festival closed. The Governor will also perform the symbolic extinguishing of the festival torch, signalling the conclusion of the multi-sport competition.

Historically, a major highlight of the ceremony will be the presentation of trophies and prize cheques to the best-performing teams and athletes, as the festival celebrates those who have distinguished themselves across various sports.

Ahead of the final day of competition, defending champions Team Itu currently lead the medals table, with Team Uyo mounting a strong challenge in second place, while Nsit Atai, in third, will be hoping to capitalise on any slip-ups by the top two.

The battle for supremacy at the top has captured the attention of indigenes of Itu, Uyo and Nsit Atai, who will be eagerly following the final day. At the other end of the table, however, the mood is less encouraging for at least five LGAs - Esit Eket, Etim Ekpo, Obot Akara, Eastern Obolo and Okobo - which are yet to pick up a medal going into the final day.

The 2026 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival has provided a platform for young athletes to showcase their abilities, discover new talents and build the foundation for future sporting careers.

With its emphasis on talent development, competition and the promotion of tourism, the festival represents an important investment in the future of sports in the state and leaves behind opportunities for the emerging generation to carry the Akwa Ibom story to greater heights.
