Former South Side Compton Crips gang leader Duane “Keffe D.” Davis has been found guilty of the murder of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur, nearly three decades after the musician was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Davis was convicted by a jury in Las Vegas following a trial that revisited the circumstances surrounding Shakur’s death in 1996, one of the most enduring mysteries in popular culture.

Shakur, widely known as 2Pac, was fatally shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in a car in Las Vegas. He died six days later at the age of 25.

For years, the killing generated numerous theories and speculation, but no one was arrested until Davis was charged with murder in 2023.

The prosecution’s case relied heavily on Davis’s own account of the events. At the centre of the trial was a 2019 memoir in which Davis claimed he had supplied the firearm used in the shooting.

Davis and his defence team argued that the account was largely fictional and exaggerated for publicity and commercial purposes. The jury, however, rejected the explanation and returned a guilty verdict after deliberating for only a few hours.

The conviction marks a major development in a case that has captivated music fans and the wider public for nearly 30 years.

Davis, who has previously spoken publicly about his alleged involvement in the events surrounding Shakur’s death, reportedly told the court after closing arguments that he intended to appeal the verdict.

The case is therefore unlikely to end with the conviction, as Davis’s planned appeal could prolong the legal proceedings surrounding one of the most high-profile unsolved killings in music history.
