Three-Storey Building Collapses in Abuja’s Wuse District, Rescue Operations Ongoing
By Harriet Tornguvan
ABUJA, Nigeria Panic gripped residents and business owners in the Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory FCT on Monday night after a three-storey building collapsed, triggering a massive emergency response operation.
The building, located within the Wuse district of Abuja, reportedly gave way at about 7:00 p.m., sending clouds of dust into the air and drawing hundreds of residents to the scene. Emergency responders, including personnel of the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, police officers, and other rescue agencies, were immediately mobilized to commence search-and-rescue operations.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as the structure crumbled, with concerns that some occupants could have been trapped beneath the rubble. As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released an official casualty figure, while rescue efforts continued through the night.
According to preliminary reports, the building had earlier been marked and sealed by the FCT Department of Development Control over concerns relating to its structural condition. Officials reportedly directed occupants to vacate the premises before the eventual collapse.
The FCT Police Command confirmed receiving a distress call shortly after the incident and deployed officers to secure the area and assist emergency workers. Other agencies involved in the operation included the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Fire Service, and other relevant authorities.
The collapse has once again raised concerns over building safety, regulatory compliance, and the enforcement of construction standards within the nation’s capital. The incident comes amid growing public concern following a series of building collapses recorded in Abuja in recent months.
Residents have called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration to intensify monitoring of construction activities and ensure that developers adhere strictly to approved building regulations.
Authorities have assured the public that a full investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Rescue teams remained on site throughout the night, combing through the debris in search of possible survivors.
Further updates are expected as emergency officials provide verified information on casualties, the status of rescue operations, and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
