The Defence Headquarters has issued an update on the recent abduction of Dr. Ganiyat Nurudeen Popoola, her husband, Squadron Leader Nurudeen Abiodun Popoola, and a teenager, Master Folaranmi Abdul Mughiy, which occurred on September 27, 2023.

In a statement, Major General Edward Buba, spokesperson for Defence Media Operations, confirmed that non-kinetic efforts by the military successfully secured the release of Dr. Popoola and the young abductee.

General Buba highlighted that military operations also facilitated the rescue of numerous other hostages held by terrorists in the North Central theater. However, he noted that certain operations to free additional individuals remain ongoing.

General Buba indicated that while specific details surrounding the release of the hostages are classified, these recent developments suggest a growing willingness among certain terrorist leaders and fighters to surrender.

“This release demonstrates an increasing trend of terrorists opting for surrender.

"We have seen similar patterns in the North East, and this is a positive sign in conflict situations.

General Buba further emphasized that additional information on this operation will be shared in due course.

He added a strong call for collective action against insecurity, stressing that achieving lasting peace requires not only military efforts but also the cooperation of all citizens.
