The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on employers across the country to deliberately mentor corps members serving in their establishments, stressing that such guidance is critical to grooming responsible future leaders.

Brigadier General Nafiu made the call in Abuja while hosting the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Emomotimi Agama, and his delegation at the NYSC headquarters, where both agencies formalised a partnership on financial literacy for corps members through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The NYSC boss emphasised that the manner in which employers engage, nurture and guide corps members during their service year would significantly influence their personal development and contributions to national growth.

“The way you relate with them, build and mentor them will greatly impact their future and the nation.

"noting that corps members are “resilient and committed young Nigerians” who require proper guidance to realise their full potential, Nafiu said

He commended the SEC leadership under Agama for reforms that have strengthened the Nigerian capital market and boosted public confidence, expressing optimism that the collaboration would deliver mutual benefits to corps members, the NYSC and the wider public.

Nafiu further reaffirmed the scheme’s readiness to sustain a productive partnership with the commission, particularly in equipping young Nigerians with essential financial knowledge.

Earlier, SEC Director-General, Agama, lauded the NYSC for its pivotal role in fostering national unity, integration and socio-economic development, noting that the scheme’s nationwide reach remains unparalleled.

He stressed the importance of exposing corps members to financial education, describing it as a vital tool for achieving financial independence and leadership readiness.

According to him, corps members represent a strategic channel for promoting financial literacy at the grassroots, given their deployment across communities nationwide.

“The essence of NYSC cannot be over-emphasised in terms of culture, association, networking and future relations,” Agama said, while reflecting on his own service year and expressing satisfaction with the partnership.

The collaboration between the NYSC and SEC is expected to enhance financial awareness among young Nigerians and deepen financial inclusion across the country.
