Future Commanders Must Think Beyond Service Lines, Embrace Joint Operations — CAS

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has charged future military commanders to prioritise synergy, strategic leadership and innovation, describing joint operations among the Armed Forces as a critical requirement for success in modern warfare.

Air Marshal Aneke gave the charge while delivering a lecture titled “Military Strategic Leadership: My Perspective” to participants of Air War Course 12/2026 at the Air Force War College Nigeria (AFWCN) in Makurdi.

The course attracted senior officers from the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy, as well as allied participants from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana and the Kingdom of Morocco.

According to the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the CAS emphasised that the evolving security environment requires military leaders with the capacity to think strategically, adapt to emerging threats and work collaboratively across Services.

Air Marshal Aneke noted that military leadership goes beyond the exercise of command authority, stressing that effective leaders must inspire personnel, strengthen institutions and transform national security objectives into achievable operational outcomes.

“Synergy is not optional; it is a strategic necessity,” the CAS said, highlighting the importance of integrated planning and coordinated execution among the Armed Forces.

He explained that the combination of airpower and surface forces enhances operational effectiveness, adding that joint force integration remains vital in tackling contemporary security challenges.

The Air Chief further outlined his command philosophy, which focuses on developing a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready force capable of delivering effective airpower in collaboration with sister Services.

He said the Nigerian Air Force is pursuing this vision through enhanced training, personnel development, innovation, strategic partnerships and sustained efforts to improve operational readiness.

Air Marshal Aneke also stressed the need for military leaders to embrace forward-looking decision-making, noting that strategic leadership requires policy foresight rather than reactive approaches to security challenges.

Highlighting the importance of personnel in achieving military objectives, the CAS urged the participants to promote ethical leadership, emotional intelligence, professional development and strategic thinking.

He described trust among the Services and partner nations as a foundation for successful joint operations, encouraging the future commanders to build stronger relationships that would enhance interoperability and mission effectiveness.

The lecture ended with an interactive session where participants exchanged views with the CAS on strategic leadership, joint operations and the future of warfare.

The engagement reinforced the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force to developing capable strategic leaders who can deliver effective airpower in partnership with other Services and international allies in support of national security objectives.
