Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have rescued ten National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers abducted during an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on Lassa Community in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The victims were abducted on Monday, June 29, 2026, when terrorists attacked the Technical Secondary School in Lassa at about 9:00 a.m. while students were writing their examinations.

Following the report of the incident, the Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI swiftly deployed troops, supported by strike and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft from the Air Component, to conduct a coordinated search and rescue mission.

The troops, with aerial support providing critical intelligence and operational guidance, engaged the terrorists around the Daggu area during the rescue operation. After a fierce exchange of fire, the military successfully rescued ten of the abducted victims, who were found unharmed and are currently receiving necessary care and support.

During the encounter, troops successfully outmanoeuvred the fleeing terrorists, inflicting casualties on them and recovering seven motorcycles used by the attackers, thereby disrupting their escape efforts.

However, the operation came with a heavy sacrifice as one gallant soldier of Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force lost their lives during the firefight.

The military described their sacrifice as a reflection of the bravery, dedication and commitment of security personnel and local volunteers who continue to risk their lives in the fight against terrorism and the protection of civilians across the North East.

Meanwhile, troops have intensified efforts to rescue the remaining victim and apprehend the fleeing terrorists, as operations continue to restore peace and security in affected communities.
