The Nigerian Navy has rescued three passengers from a capsized boat along the Bennett River in Warri, Delta State, averting a possible tragedy on the nation’s inland waterways.
The rescue operation was carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA during a routine maritime security patrol aimed at ensuring the safety and security of waterways.
According to a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the naval patrol team spotted passengers in distress and floating debris from a capsized boat while conducting operations along the river.
Responding swiftly, the personnel immediately launched a search and rescue operation, successfully recovering the three victims and salvaging some valuable items from the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the boat capsized due to severe weather conditions and rough waves caused by a heavy rainstorm.
The rescued passengers were evacuated to the NNS DELTA Sick Bay, where they received prompt medical attention and were discharged after their condition was stabilised.
The Nigerian Navy said the successful rescue highlights its role not only as a maritime security agency but also as a first responder during emergencies within the maritime environment.
The Navy further stated that the incident underscores the importance of continuous patrols and naval presence in protecting lives, enhancing safety, and providing immediate assistance to waterway users in distress.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment while supporting lawful activities across Nigeria’s waterways and coastal communities.
