Defence Ministry Pledges Major Upgrade for Nigerian Army University Biu

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) into a leading institution for specialised military and civilian education, with plans to undertake major infrastructural upgrades aimed at strengthening national security and capacity development.

Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), gave the assurance while receiving the Governing Council of the university at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

The minister said the government remains committed to providing sustained strategic support to the institution, describing the university as a critical platform for equipping military personnel and civilians with the technical, academic and operational expertise needed to tackle emerging and increasingly complex security challenges.

According to a statement issued by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, General Musa disclosed that the Ministry of Defence would collaborate closely with the Armed Forces of Nigeria to fully utilise the 30 per cent admission quota reserved for military personnel in the university.

He noted that the initiative would help bridge specialised skill gaps across the nation's security sector while advancing the Federal Government's drive to develop a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of the digital age.

"As the Federal Government pushes for a highly skilled workforce in this digital era, we must encourage members of the Armed Forces, ministry staff and the general public to leverage the cutting edge technological and academic solutions available at NAUB," the minister stated.

A major outcome of the meeting was a joint commitment by the Ministry and the university's Governing Council to urgently address critical infrastructural deficits on the campus.

Among the projects earmarked for execution is the construction of a state of the art Centre for Military Performance Management, described as the first of its kind in Africa. The facility is expected to serve as a hub for advanced research, strategic planning and performance evaluation in military operations and leadership.

The minister stressed that strengthening the university's infrastructure would enhance its capacity to deliver world-class education, research and innovation in support of Nigeria's defence and national development objectives.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Pioneer Pro. Chancellor of the Nigerian Army University Biu, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd), commended General Musa for what he described as his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria's defence architecture.

Buratai praised the minister's strategic foresight and dedication to the welfare and professional development of the Armed Forces, saying his leadership continues to make significant contributions to the nation's security.

He also expressed the university community's appreciation for the minister's continued support and reaffirmed NAUB's commitment to promoting academic excellence, impactful research and national service through quality education and innovation.

The renewed partnership between the Ministry of Defence and the university is expected to accelerate the institution's growth as a centre of excellence for military and civilian capacity building while supporting broader efforts to enhance Nigeria's security capabilities through education, research and technological advancement.
