The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for deeper collaboration between the Nigerian Army, the Rivers State Government and citizens to strengthen national security and protect critical national assets.

Lieutenant General Shaibu made the call on Friday during a courtesy visit to Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalaye Fubara, at the Government House in Port Harcourt as part of activities marking the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL 2026).

The Army Chief said he was in Rivers State for the week-long NADCEL 2026 activities, which will culminate in the grand finale on July 6, expressing appreciation to the Rivers State Government and its people for their hospitality and support toward the successful hosting of the annual event.

He noted that the enabling environment created by the state government had contributed significantly to the smooth conduct of the celebration and reaffirmed the Army's commitment to working closely with state authorities to address emerging security challenges.

Shaibu commended the Rivers State Government for its continued support to the Nigerian Army, stressing that sustained cooperation among the military, government and the public remains essential in tackling insecurity and safeguarding strategic national infrastructure.

Responding, Governor Fubara thanked the Chief of Army Staff for selecting Rivers State as the host of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration, describing the choice as a demonstration of confidence in the state.

The governor praised Lieutenant General Shaibu for what he described as a marked improvement in the security situation in Rivers State since he assumed office, noting that the enhanced security climate has boosted oil production and contributed to economic growth.

Fubara also acknowledged the Nigerian Army's efforts in combating insurgency, pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, describing the military as a key partner in ensuring peace and stability.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Government to sustaining its support for the Nigerian Army, both in hosting the anniversary celebration and in ongoing operations aimed at protecting critical national infrastructure, strengthening internal security and promoting Nigeria's economic stability.
