The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the critical role of Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) in strengthening discipline, leadership and operational effectiveness across the Nigerian Army.

The Army Chief made the remarks during the commissioning of the newly constructed 6 Division Regimental Sergeant Major's House in Port Harcourt, where he described RSMs as the backbone of regimental administration and custodians of discipline, standards and troop morale.

Lieutenant General Shaibu said the provision of dedicated accommodation for RSMs goes beyond personnel welfare, describing it as a strategic investment aimed at reinforcing leadership at the unit level and enhancing operational efficiency.

He noted that RSMs play a vital role in translating command directives into action, maintaining cohesion among troops and ensuring the effective implementation of operational orders across formations.

According to the COAS, RSMs also serve as the crucial link between officers and soldiers, fostering professionalism, mutual trust and esprit de corps, while providing mentorship that strengthens discipline and motivates troops in various operational theatres.

He stressed that the influence of RSMs on the conduct and effectiveness of soldiers contributes significantly to mission success, adding that improved welfare and conducive living conditions would further enhance their capacity to discharge their responsibilities.

Lieutenant General Shaibu reiterated that under his "Soldier First" philosophy, the welfare of personnel, particularly those occupying key leadership positions, remains a priority for the Nigerian Army.

He maintained that sustained investment in welfare infrastructure, especially for leadership cadres such as Regimental Sergeant Majors, is essential to building a resilient, professional and combat-ready force capable of addressing Nigeria's evolving security challenges.

The commissioning of the 6 Division RSM's House formed part of activities aimed at improving personnel welfare and strengthening leadership capacity within the Nigerian Army.
