By Harriet Tornguvan
Country music legend, songwriter, actress and philanthropist Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80.
Parton passed away peacefully in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, her family announced. The announcement was made by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, in a video shared on her social media platforms. The family did not immediately disclose a cause of death.
Born on January 19, 1946, in Tennessee, Parton rose from humble beginnings as one of 12 children to become one of the most influential and recognisable figures in global music. Her career spanned more than six decades and established her as a prolific songwriter, recording artist, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist.
She was celebrated for timeless songs including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” the latter of which became a worldwide hit after Whitney Houston recorded a celebrated version for The Bodyguard soundtrack.
Parton sold more than 100 million records during her career and earned numerous honours, including 10 Grammy Awards and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. She also received the National Medal of Arts and a Kennedy Center Honor for her contribution to American culture.
Beyond music, Parton built a lasting legacy through philanthropy. Her Imagination Library literacy programme provided free books to children, while her business ventures included Dollywood, the popular theme park in Tennessee.
Her generosity also extended to medical research, education and disaster relief, further cementing her reputation as an entertainer whose influence went far beyond the stage.
Parton's death comes months after the passing of her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 after nearly six decades of marriage.
Tributes have since poured in from fellow entertainers, public figures and fans around the world, with many remembering Parton for her extraordinary musical talent, humour, warmth and commitment to helping others.
With her distinctive voice, unforgettable songs and remarkable journey from rural Tennessee to international stardom, Dolly Parton leaves behind a legacy that transcends country music and generations.
She will be remembered as one of the most enduring cultural icons of the 20th and 21st centuries.
