Defence Ministry Reaffirms Commitment to Military Veterans’ Welfare, Pension Concerns
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the welfare, remuneration and pension concerns of military veterans, assuring them that their legitimate demands are receiving the attention of relevant authorities.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.), gave the assurance on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, during a courtesy visit by representatives of military veterans to the Ministry of Defence at Ship House, Abuja.
The minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, acknowledged the sacrifices and distinguished service rendered by military veterans to the nation.
He said the government remained committed to ensuring that the welfare of veterans was given the priority it deserved, particularly issues concerning wage and pension adjustments.
According to him, relevant military, pension and financial authorities are currently engaging with a view to arriving at a fair, sustainable and implementable resolution that would ensure veterans are not disadvantaged.
General Musa appealed to the veterans to remain calm and patient while sustaining constructive dialogue with the government, stressing that continuous engagement remained the most effective means of resolving outstanding issues.
He noted that any adjustment to veterans’ entitlements must be properly computed, adequately funded and implemented in line with existing approvals, regulations and due process.
The minister explained that such measures were necessary to guarantee the sustainability of any approved adjustment and prevent unintended disparities in the implementation of veterans’ benefits.
He assured the representatives that the Ministry of Defence would continue to engage with them and provide updates as progress was made towards resolving the issues raised.
General Musa further reiterated the Federal Government’s appreciation of the patriotism, courage and sacrifices of military veterans, saying their service to the nation must be recognised not only through words but also through sustained attention to their welfare and legitimate entitlements.
The engagement underscores the government’s efforts to maintain dialogue with military veterans while seeking lasting solutions to concerns surrounding their welfare and pensions.
