By Harriet Tornguvan
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the Federal Character Principle in all its operations, pledging closer collaboration with the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to promote equity, fairness and national integration across the country.
The Director General of the NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the FCC, Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, at the Commission's headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the visit, General Nafiu commended the Commission for its dedication to ensuring fairness in recruitment, appointments, promotions and the distribution of personnel across Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
He noted that the NYSC has consistently complied with due process and government regulations in carrying out its statutory responsibilities, a commitment that has earned the Scheme recognition for excellence in public service delivery.
The NYSC Director General stressed that the Scheme remains fully committed to observing both the letter and spirit of the Federal Character Principle, describing it as a vital mechanism for ensuring equitable representation of Nigerians across states, geopolitical zones, ethnic and religious groups.
According to him, the mandates of the NYSC and the Federal Character Commission are closely aligned, as both institutions are focused on fostering national unity, inclusiveness and equal participation in nation-building.
General Nafiu also pledged that the NYSC would continue to strengthen its partnership with the Commission to ensure full compliance with existing guidelines on personnel placement and other matters relating to the Federal Character Principle.
In her remarks, FCC Executive Chairman Hulayat Omidiran said the Commission was established to promote fairness and inclusiveness in government institutions by ensuring equitable representation of all segments of the Nigerian federation.
She called on ministries, departments and agencies to strictly adhere to the Commission's policies and guidelines, noting that compliance would help sustain public confidence and prevent feelings of marginalisation among citizens.
Earlier, the NYSC Director General held an interactive session with the FCC Committee on Social Development, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, chaired by the Federal Commissioner representing Plateau State, Pam Bot-Mang.
The meeting centred on strengthening collaboration between both institutions and advancing equity in recruitment, postings, promotions and appointments across government establishments.
