Residents Raise Alarm Over Karu Refuse Dump, Urge Urgent Intervention

Residents and stakeholders in Karu, Abuja, have raised concerns over the worsening condition of the Karu refuse dump, describing the situation as a serious threat to public health and environmental safety.

The refuse dump, which reportedly serves the densely populated Karu community, has been left unattended for months, resulting in the accumulation of large quantities of waste and the spread of offensive odours across the area.

Residents expressed worry that the decomposing refuse could create conditions conducive to the spread of diseases, particularly among people living and trading around the dump.

They also questioned the apparent lack of action by the relevant authorities to address the deteriorating environmental condition, calling for immediate evacuation of the accumulated waste and sustained waste-management measures.

The residents appealed to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, to direct the relevant local authority to urgently intervene and restore the area to a safe and sanitary condition.

They stressed that prompt action was necessary to prevent further deterioration and protect residents from potential health hazards associated with indiscriminate waste accumulation.

The development has also renewed calls for stronger environmental management and responsible governance in densely populated communities across the Federal Capital Territory.

Stakeholders urged the authorities to adopt a sustainable waste-disposal system, ensure regular evacuation of refuse and enforce relevant environmental regulations to prevent a recurrence of the situation.
