FG Deploys New Strategies to End Insecurity, Matawalle Visits Kano Over Garun Mallam Attack
By Harriet Tornguvan
The Federal Government has unveiled renewed strategies to tackle insecurity across the country, with emphasis on proactive operations, long-term security planning and stronger collaboration among the federal, state and local governments.
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, stated this in Kano during a condolence and assessment visit to the Kano State Government House following a bandit attack on August 29, 2026, in Chiroma Village, Garun Mallam Local Government Area of the state.
Matawalle assured the Kano State Government and residents that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remained committed to defeating insecurity and restoring lasting peace across the country.
He disclosed that President Tinubu had constituted a committee to develop a five-year Defence and Security Plan aimed at providing a long-term framework for addressing emerging and existing security threats.
“The President has constituted a committee to develop a Five-Year Defence and Security Plan. This will guide our long-term approach to tackling security threats across the country,” the minister said.
Matawalle also disclosed that troops had swiftly responded to the Garun Mallam attack, with the Commander, 3 Brigade, Kano, Brigadier General Jimoh, leading a joint rescue operation involving personnel of the Joint Task Force from Hawan-Kwano and Kwanar Dangora camps.
According to him, the operation resulted in the successful rescue of kidnapped victims around the Yan-Kifi Bridge and Marabar Kwari areas of Garun Mallam LGA.
He commended the troops for their courage and prompt response, assuring that the Federal Government would continue to provide the Armed Forces and other security agencies with the resources required to improve their operational effectiveness.
“We will continue doing everything possible to support our security services to ensure our country is safe. I assure you that soon, insecurity will be a thing of the past, and we will all live in peace and prosperity,” he said.
The minister stressed that the fight against insecurity could not be left to the Federal Government alone, urging state and local governments as well as citizens to play active roles in securing their communities.
“It takes the combined effort of local government, state and federal levels to tackle this issue of insecurity. We also need timely and credible information from citizens to security agencies,” Matawalle said.
He further assured Kano State of increased Federal Government support, including the deployment of additional fighting vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment to strengthen security operations across the state.
Earlier, the minister held a closed-door security meeting with the commanders of 3 Brigade and other security formations in Kano, where he directed them to sustain the momentum of ongoing operations and intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities.
Matawalle reiterated the Federal Government’s determination to provide the necessary resources and support to safeguard lives and property, while protecting the territorial integrity of the nation.
In his response, the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, thanked the minister for the visit and pledged the continued cooperation of the state government with the Federal Government and security agencies.
“We are confident in your leadership. At the state level, we will continue to do what needs to be done to ensure security and stability in Kano,” the governor said.
Yusuf said the state government had taken note of the President’s commitment to improving security and would continue to support efforts aimed at ensuring that insecurity did not take root in Kano State.
