By Harriet Tornguvan
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commended the nation’s security agencies and other stakeholders for the successful rescue of 16 Corps Members abducted in Kogi State while travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja.
The Corps Members were abducted on August 26, 2026, after completing their Orientation Course at the NYSC camp in Bayelsa State and were travelling to Abuja on relocation.
In a statement, the NYSC Management expressed profound appreciation to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Kogi State vigilante groups and other individuals and organisations that contributed to the search and rescue operation.
The Scheme described the operation as a demonstration of professionalism, courage, commitment and effective coordination among the security agencies involved.
It also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, was said to have remained concerned about the safety and welfare of the Corps Members throughout the incident.
According to the NYSC, the security agencies were motivated by the President’s concern and commitment to ensuring the safe and urgent recovery of the abducted Corps Members.
The Scheme also commended the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Minister of Youth Development for their crucial roles in the recovery efforts.
The NYSC expressed appreciation to the families of the affected Corps Members for their patience and cooperation during the period, as well as members of the media for handling the incident professionally without compromising the safety of the victims while in captivity.
It said all 16 Corps Members had been safely recovered and were in high spirits, with the intention of resuming duties at their respective places of primary assignment.
The Scheme, however, acknowledged that the ordeal was traumatic and assured the affected Corps Members of its continued support as they recover from the experience.
Reaffirming its commitment to the safety and welfare of Corps Members nationwide, the NYSC said it would continue to collaborate with government institutions and security agencies to strengthen protective measures.
It added that lessons had been learnt from the incident and that relevant protocols would be reviewed to prevent a recurrence.
The NYSC described the successful rescue as a tribute to courage, duty and patriotism, while expressing gratitude to all those who contributed to bringing the Corps Members home safely.
