The Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 25 persons in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in Ondo State.
The association, in a statement signed by its President, Odita Sunday, described the October 6, 2026 incident as a tragic national loss, extending its condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims.
DECAN also commiserated with the Nigerian Air Force, the Chief of the Air Staff, officers and airmen, as well as the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria, saying the incident underscored the sacrifices routinely made by military personnel in the service of the country.
The association acknowledged the courage and dedication of NAF personnel who undertake demanding operations in defence of Nigeria, often under difficult and hazardous conditions.
DECAN urged Nigerians to respect the dignity and privacy of the bereaved families while allowing relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
It also appealed to the public to refrain from circulating unverified information, graphic materials and speculative narratives capable of worsening the pain of the affected families and the wider military community.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to responsible, accurate, compassionate and professional journalism, particularly when reporting tragedies and other matters of national security.
DECAN prayed for strength and fortitude for the families of the deceased and eternal rest for the departed.
